Hi everyone, Circle doesn’t have have any big events this month but we do hope to see you in classes as we have new teachers joining the roster.  A special thank you to all to made it out to our performance at the Rossini Festival.  Due to a last minute change of plans we ended up hosting the showing in our dance studio at The Emporium Building. An extra special thanks to the choreographers and performance who helped put this together, as well as core dancer Callie Minnich who directed the ensemble for this event.  .

Summer Ballet Workshop with Colleen Moore

Colleen Moore of White Orchid Bridal and Studio Arts for Dancers will again be joining us this summer to teach a ballet workshop during the months of June and July. This class will be held during our regularly scheduled ballet class and is open to dancers of all levels.  Colleen is a fabulous teacher, we are so happy to have her with us again!

April First Friday- Hei Park Photography
If you are looking something to do for April’s First Friday on the 5th, consider visiting The Center for Creative Minds at 23 Emory Place in downtown Knoxville from 6-10pm for Hei Park’s photography exhibition which features a few performers from Circle Modern Dance.  Hei is a wonderful supporter of CMD and we have appreciated working with her over the past few years! Check it out!   Her work will remain on display through April 14th.

Upcoming Workshops

Dance Workshop with Deborah Whelan

Circle Modern Dance presents a weekend workshop with Deborah Whelan March 16 and 17. Deborah’s teaching, performing and choreographic experience spans 4 decades.  She has taught and designed dance curriculums across the east coast at universities including Penn State,  Meredith College and the University of Tennessee.
Deborah is currently directing the dance program at Beaumont Magnet Honors Academy and the childrens dance company Beaumont Dance Works.  The recipient of many awards and accolades, her teaching philosophy is shaped by years of study with Bill Evans, Ann Green Gilbert, Liz Lerman, and Naima Prevots.

Deborah will be exploring the question of what an intimate life is through the use of improvisation, Bartinieff based technique, choreography and journaling.

Questioning, responding, observing and reflecting on our intimate lives through dance as movers and human beings, how do we respond to the big questions of an intimate life? Such as:
What does co-dependence look like? Why do we need to be still? How do we build bridges to get where we want to go? How do we keep ourselves from falling? How do we protect others?

All this will be explored through the practice of a Bartenieff Fundamentals driven technique, with improvisation and choreography centered on questioning, responding, observing and reflecting. In our choreography, how can we embrace the beauty and satisfaction of repetition and theme and variation?
There will be some journaling, so notebooks are recommended.

Joy Davis Countertechnique Workshop

Former CMD Artistic Director, Joy Davis, will be leading a dance workshop at UT-Knoxville on March 8th through the 10th at the Alumni Memorial Building Dance Studio.

The Countertechnique® class is a contemporary dance technique class. It stretches, coordinates and strengthens the body, making the dancer sweat, build stamina and really move. The class starts with a recurring set of exercises, allowing dancers to investigate the Countertechnique® principles in detail. The second half of the class consists of changing components, working towards luscious movement combinations and jumping at the end. The Countertechnique® class results in dancers using less energy, losing their fear of taking risks and gaining speed in changing direction.
*Classes are structured for advanced dancers with experience in contemporary/modern technique and/or ballet.*

Circle Modern Dance hopes you are enjoying your your February, Chinese New Year and Mardi Gras Season. This is a rather quiet month for us but we are still going strong in classes as we get geared up for fun spring activities. Below you will find information on our classes, including those offered by our partner organization Capoeira Fundo da Mata as well as some upcoming workshops  in town.

Also, If you are looking for something to do today, February 10th at 2pm, Core Dancer Laura Burgamy (along with fellow dancer and familiar face Darby O’Connor) will be performing in Go! Contemporary Dance Works’ Production of Unsung Heros: The Women of World War II. This work also features wonderful live music by the Samuel Williams Quintet.
